The motivation behind this series of sculptures is my desire to create a “topic” that sparks conversation between people.

For me, communication has always been difficult — expressing the images in my mind through words or text never feels accurate enough. Everyone sees the world differently and thinks in their own unique way. For example, the same cloud might look like a cute rabbit, a puff of curly hair, or a soft cream cake to different people.

To let others see the world through my eyes, I used the colours most familiar to me, combined with the simplest geometric forms, and chose the building blocks we all played with as children as the medium — translating the scenes I see into tangible yet minimal sculptures.

These sculptures are figurative in form but carry abstract imagery; their simplicity allows everyone to freely interpret them in their own way. For me, that’s what makes it so fascinating.

I hope each viewer will realise that art and creation can be something very simple — and feel inspired to try it themselves.

As someone who was never good at starting conversations, I was surprised to find how naturally I could talk about my work with friends and even strangers. Everyone’s imagination is so different — and that diversity, that creativity, feels truly magical.
For example, a piece I created based on a Christmas tree and Santa hat was once described by a viewer as “a red-nosed firefly.” I found that description so adorable!

この彫刻シリーズを制作した動機は、人と人とのあいだに会話を生み出す「きっかけ」をつくりたいという思いからです。

私にとって「コミュニケーション」はいつも難しいものでした。頭の中にあるイメージを言葉や文章で正確に伝えることは、なかなかうまくいかないのです。人によって世界の見え方も、考え方もまったく異なります。たとえば同じ雲を見ても、ある人にはかわいいウサギに見えたり、ふわふわの髪の毛に見えたり、柔らかいクリームケーキに見えたりします。

私が見ている世界を他の人にも感じてもらうために、もっとも馴染みのある色を使い、いちばんシンプルな幾何学の形を組み合わせ、子どもの頃に遊んだ「積み木」を媒体として選びました。私の見た景色を、具体的でありながらも簡潔な彫刻として“翻訳”しているのです。

これらの彫刻は具象的な存在でありながら、抽象的なイメージを内包しています。シンプルな形だからこそ、見る人それぞれが自由に想像し、自分の感じたままに語ることができます。それがとても面白いことだと感じています。

私は観る人に、アートや創作はもっと気軽で身近なものだと感じてもらい、ぜひ自分でも試してみたいと思ってほしいのです。

もともと会話を始めるのが苦手だった私ですが、作品をきっかけに友人や見知らぬ人と自然に話せるようになったことに驚きました。人の想像力は本当に多様で、その違いこそが創造力の源だと感じます。
たとえば、私がクリスマスツリーとサンタ帽をモチーフに制作した作品を、ある観客は「赤い鼻のホタル」と表現してくれました。その言葉がとても可愛くて印象的でした。

Early experimental paintings

2019, London

This exhibition builds on a sculptural project Sen began in 2019, inspired by the Memphis design movement. Originally conceived as a modular public installation, it was designed for dancers in parks—as both a resting structure and a customizable photo backdrop.

The block-like forms could be rearranged for different functions, blending playful form with practical use. Sen drew inspiration from Memphis-style tableware and kitchen objects, creating sculptural models and complementary textile and print designs as part of the visual concept.

この展示は、2019年にSenが開始した彫刻プロジェクトを発展させたものです。メンフィス・デザイン運動から着想を得て、もともとは公園でダンサーが使うためのモジュール式インスタレーションとして構想されました。

遊び心のある形状と実用性を兼ね備えたブロック状の構造物は、休憩スペースやカスタマイズ可能なフォトスポットとして機能します。

Senはメンフィス風の食器やキッチン用品からもインスピレーションを得て、彫刻作品とともにテキスタイルやプリントのデザインも展開しました。

Early experimental sculptures

2019, London

For this exhibition, Sen hand-painted nearly 300 wooden blocks and used them to create 88 small sculptures. Within a limited set of shapes and colours, she explored endless possibilities in form and composition.

The number “8” also echoes the infinity symbol (∞), suggesting that even the simplest materials and forms can lead to infinite creative outcomes.

Sen gave each sculpture a unique name, inspired by the associations evoked by its shape. Rather than using cold numbers, each name represents a character, an action, an object, or a place. Through these titles, she invites viewers to see the world as she imagines it—infusing each piece with emotion and narrative.

今回の展示では、約300個の木製ブロックを手作業で彩色し、88点の小さな彫刻作品を制作。限られた形と色の中で、無限とも言える構成の可能性を探求しています。数字の「8」は無限大（∞）の象徴でもあり、シンプルな素材や形から生まれる創造力の広がりを示唆しています。

各作品には番号ではなく、形から連想されるキャラクターや動作、モノ、場所にちなんだ名前が付けられており、Senの想像力あふれる世界観を観客に共有する、感情と物語性に満ちた作品群となっています。

Based on a painting created by Sen in 2019, this handmade tufting rug draws inspiration from 1980s Memphis Design. Carefully handcrafted in Japan, it translates colour and geometry into textured, layered forms. More than a functional item, it stands as an art piece within a space, bringing both energy and character.

The tufting rugs for this exhibition were produced by “tufting shop & studio RUGMATAG”.

本シリーズのタフティング作品は、アーティスト Sen が2019年に描いた絵画を原型とし、1980年代のメンフィス·デザインから着想を得ています。⽇本のクラフトマンシップによる完全⼿作業で制作され、タフティング技法を⽤いることで、⾊彩と幾何学的要素に⽴体感と奥⾏きを与えています。⽇常のインテリアとしての実⽤性を持ちながら、空間にエネルギーをもたらすアートピースとしてもお楽しみいただけます。

本展覧会で展示されるタフティングラグは、「tufting shop & studio RUGMATAG」によって制作されました。
